Vybz Kartel Launches Line Of “Skin Brightening” Products For Men

Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel is launching his own line of men’s cosmetics this month.
Plenty of artists have their own cosmetics lines but this particular line is a bit different. Kartel has a variety of skin-brightening products.
His launch couldn’t have come at a worse time. The 35-year old, along with two other men are facing murder, conspiracy to commit murder and illegal possession of firearm charges arising from the shooting death of Barrington Burton, a St. Catherine businessman/promoter, in July.
Kartel shocked and outraged some of his fans earlier this year when he appeared several shades lighter than his normal chocolate brown complexion. Apparently, in the Carribean having lighter skin implies wealth.
Kartel told Vibe Magazine in a interview:
“I’m my own man, and as such I do my own thing. When black women stop straightening their hair and wearing wigs and weaves, when white women stop getting lip and butt injections and implants, when bald men stop getting hair transplants, and when people stop getting nose jobs and cosmetic surgery then I’ll stop using the ‘cakesoap’ and we’ll all live naturally ever after. Until then F**k you all.”
Kartel originally claimed to have used ‘cake soap’ to lighten his skin but after the Jamaican manufacturer of his new product, Blue Power Group, denied his claims, Kartel said that he actually used his own special concoction.
In 2007, the Jamaican government reportedly ran a Don’t Kill the Skin campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of skin-lightening products. They use advertisements, literature and counseling to convince people about the harm of bleaching.
