Vanessa Bryant’s Ex-Stepfather Says She’s a Gold Digger Like Her Mother

Vanessa Bryant’s ex-stepfather Stephen Laine isn’t buying her victim role.

Laine believes Kobe Bryant should have known his soon-to-be ex-wife would take him to the cleaners in their divorce, TMZ reports. He feels she’s learned her gold digging ways from her mother.

Laine, an inventory manager for a food company, was married to Vanessa’s mother from 1990 to 2003. He helped raise the former video vixen from a child into adulthood. He told TMZ, “Her mother taught her well to wait for the ten-year mark [before divorcing].”

He explains, “In California, it’s considered a long-term marriage and then she gets paid for life or until she remarries … just like her mother is doing to me. I have to pay her mom $1,800 every month and clearly they don’t need it.”

Kobe’s soon-to-be ex-mother-in-law is currently living in one of his mansions. A TMZ source said Vanessa is very good to her.

“I have a six-year-old daughter and that money could be used toward her college fund or something,” Laine adds “You’d think she’d care … but no, she’s spiteful.”

Vanessa filed for divorce after 10 and a half years of marriage last Friday. But according to, it wasn’t the first time she thought about splitting.

“Vanessa almost threw in the towel four years ago,” a source told RadarOnline. “Kobe has always had a slew of girlfriends, and the cheating was almost blatant.”

At the time, however, Vanessa opted not to go through with the divorce papers after Kobe vowed to stop cheating and the couple went to marriage counseling together.

Vanessa stood by her man in 2003 when he was accused of raping a 19-year-old hotel employee Katelyn Faber. The assault case was eventually dropped by prosecutors after Faber refused to testify in the trial. A separate civil lawsuit was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

“Vanessa wanted to stay together for the children,” a source told RadarOnline of Vanessa’s decision to call it quits. “Vanessa stood by Kobe during his darkest hour, and she believed him when he said there would be no more women.

“Vanessa began to get suspicious again about 16 months ago about Kobe cheating on her, he knew that if he wasn’t faithful, she would leave him. Vanessa had no other choice.”
