Terrence Howard may be starring in the movie The Butler, but his relationship with his ex-wife have put him back in the spotlight.
A Los Angeles judge ordered Howard to stay away from Michelle Ghent on Tuesday after she claimed the Oscar-nominated actor “sucker punched” and kicked her during a fight in Costa Rica. Ghent and Howard are divorced but went on a vacation to attempt to reconcile their marriage.
Ghent claimed in a lengthy declaration that Howard “sucker punched” her in the face, “grabbed” her neck, threw her against a mirror and tried to choke her three times during a July 29 argument in a vacation rental home. She said she “nervously” pepper sprayed Howard after he glared at her and “looked toward the space next to the bed where he keeps two curved knives about 4-6 inches in length.”
Ghent said Howard turned his head when she sprayed and knocked her to the ground.
“While I was on the ground, (Howard) kicked me repeatedly in the head and shoulders with strong blows,” she said. “I knew I had to get away from (Howard) or he would try to kill me.”
Ghent claimed Howard turned violent after she told him their effort to rekindle their romance wasn’t working. She released released some very graphic photos of her face, which was visibly bruised (she had a black eye). early Wednesday morning.
Howard filed his own statement with the court claiming it was “no coincidence” that Ghent applied for her restraining order while he was promoting “The Butler.” The 44-year old claims he is the victim.
“Michelle suddenly went crazy for no apparent reason, said ‘I told you not to f-k with me,’ and she took out a canister of mace/pepper spray and proceeded to spray me,” he wrote in his sworn statement.
Howard said Ghent also threated to kill him and his family during their blowup argument in Costa Rica.
During an interview, Howard alleges his ex-wife maced him, his adult daughter, and other family members during the altercation.
“Unfortunately I’ve tried to help people and it’s not necessarily in the same enlightened path, of trying to help themselves,” Howard said. “We’re divorced now, and she should stay that way. And I just wish the best for her, but as far as me harming somebody … I really can’t harm a fly.”
Howard continued, “It’s completely against my spirit, but I’m so heartbroken, that you can see that doing it on a night like this is only for an attempt to try and hurt me. [The allegations are] completely wrong, unfortunately, there are some documents that will come out and will tell everything that has occurred, but I never laid my hands on that woman. Or any woman, that’s just not my way.”
Howard and Ghent married in January 2010 and less than a year later the couple divorced. Ghent filed a restraining order against Howard just nine months later. She claimed domestic violence abuse.
