Golfer Sergio Garcia has taken is dislike for Tiger Woods to new heights after his latest comment.

Garcia is not ready to let his beef with Woods go. And the tension between the two took a ugly turn on Tuesday night. While speaking with the media at a dinner for the European Tour, a reporter asked Garcia if he was planning to have Woods over for dinner during the US Open. Garcia’s response, “We will have him around every night. We will serve fried chicken.”

Garcia or his handlers apparently realized the joke could be viewed as racist and quickly apologized.

“I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players’ Awards dinner,” Garcia told The Guardian. “I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.”

Woods was pleased with the comments. He posted on Twitter, “The comment that was made wasn’t silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate. I’m confident that there is real regret that the remark was made. The Players [tournament] ended nearly two weeks ago and it’s long past time to move on and talk about golf.”

The drama began when Garcia accused Woods of distracting him during the Players’ golf Championship in May. Since then, Garcia and Woods have traded words via the media and avoided each other.

Garcia may have been joking when he made the comment, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t racist. And this isn’t the first time Woods has heard the remark. After Woods won the Masters in 1997, Fuzzy Zoeller said that fried chicken would be served to Tiger at the champions’ dinner.

Although Woods has made statements in the past that he doesn’t consider himself only black, he’s always reminded by his competition that is how they see him.
