Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son is reportedly in critical condition at a South Dakota hospital after he was allegedly beaten.
According to the Argus Leader, police arrested 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson and charged him with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of the toddler. Patterson is dating Peterson’s son’s mother. She was not at home at the time of the alleged beating.
The mother’s name is being withheld from all official reports, but EveryJoe.com named Ann ‘Ashley’ Doohen as the mother of the toddler. And it appears that she is indeed the mother of the child, according to her Facebook profile.
TMZ reports, emergency responders arrived to the apartment where Peterson’s son was living at 5:46 PM on Wednesday and found the child unresponsive. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Patterson reportedly called the police at 5:34 p.m. to report that the child had choking injuries. The infant was taken to a hospital by ambulance, and police later determined that the injuries were “consistent with abuse” and not accidental. Law enforcement officials reportedly told TMZ that the child suffered severe head injuries.
“Sometimes, it ends up there was a crime that took place. Sometimes not,” police spokesman Sam Clemens said on Thursday. “(We’re) just trying to talk to people that are involved. Just trying to figure out what happened; that’s the big part, I guess.”
Peterson’s son was reportedly living in Sioux Falls with the boy’s mother and Patterson. The injured child is Adrian’s son, but it’s not Adrian Peterson Jr., the child he’s been famously photographed with in public over the years.
Peterson returned to the Vikings’ team facility on Friday morning after dealing with a situation sources described as “tragic.” The Vikings play at the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
“I really appreciate all the support from fans and the Vikings,” Peterson said after Friday’s practice, per Sean Jensen of the Pioneer Press. “I ask y’all respect my privacy.”
When asked about his status for Sunday, Peterson said he will “without a doubt” be playing and added that he will be “focused” and “ready to roll.”
“I’m able to release a lot of stress through sports,” he said.
UPDATE: The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Peterson’s two-year-old son died Friday afternoon, two days after allegedly suffering injuries at the hands of Patterson.
Kelonland.com details Patterson’s criminal history.
Court documents reveal the 27 year old has been arrested multiple times on various charges. He was arrested in 2004 for violating a protection order, but that was later dropped by the prosecutor. A 2012 arrest for aggravated assault was also dismissed by a prosecutor. Patterson has served time in jail for Eluding officers in 2010. He was also sentenced to five days in jail after pleading guilty to simple assault last year.
