A nurse who transferred a prank phone call from two Australian DJs about the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s health has died in a suspected suicide.

Jacintha Saldanha, a mother of two, was found at her home unconscious two days after she transferred a prank call from a Australian radio station to Middleton’s hospital ward. Paramedics were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene, the DailyMail reports.

‘Their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad  time,’ a statement by Prince William and Middleton said.

Saldanha was working on the switchboard when DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian prank called the King Edward VII Hospital where Middleton was admitted for extreme morning sickness following the announcement of her pregnancy.

Saldanha fell for the joke thinking she was speaking to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles and transferred a call where another nurse gave some details on Kate’s condition.

Greig said she and her colleague did not expect the prank call would result in them being put through to a hospital nurse.

“We were expecting to be hung up on,” Greig told The Telegraph. “We didn’t even know what to say when we got put through. They were the worst accents ever and we were sure when we made the phone call that 100 people at least before us would have tried the same thing.”

Christian added, “Now the whole world is talking.”

Greig and Christian were taken off the air on Friday after it was reported the nurse committed suicide. The company that owns 2Day FM released a statement to RumorFix that said they are “deeply saddened” by the tragic news.
