Charles Ramsey is a hero.
If it weren’t for Ramsey responding to screams he heard from his neighbor’s home, three Ohio women would still be imprisoned. Ramsey helped Amanda Berry, 27, Georgina “Gina” DeJes,23, and Michelle Knight, 30, escape a make shift prison after being there for nearly 10 years.
The three women who were snatched off the same Cleveland block about 10 years ago by a Cleveland school bus driver. Ariel Castro, 52, was taken into custody Monday along with his two brothers. Castro kept the women hidden in a basement for 10 years. At least one of the women gave birth to a daughter, now 6, while in captivity.
On Monday, Ramsey was home from work, eating McDonald’s when he heard screams and went to the home to investigate.
“This girl is kicking the door and screaming,” he told NBC WKYC-TV. “So I go over there … and I say, ‘Can I help? What’s going on?’ And she says, ‘Help me get out! I’m Amanda Berry… I’ve been missing for 10 years!” Ramsey said he believed the woman was involved in a domestic violence dispute.
Berry was snatched at age 16 in 2003, as she left her job at McDonald’s. DeJesus was 14 when she was taken while walking home from school in 2004. Knight was kidnapped in 2002.
Ramsey, who lives across the street from the house, and another man broke down the door so Berry could escape. “We had to kick open the bottom,” Ramsey said. “Lucky on that door it was aluminum. It was cheap. She climbed out with her daughter.”
Ramsey added,”I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Either she homeless or she’s got problems. That’s the only reason she’d run to a black man!”
The three women were transported to a local hospital where they were reunited with their families. Berry is pictured above with her older sister and daughter.
Ramsey said he saw Castro in the neighborhood every day. “You got some big testicles to pull this off, bro,” said Ramsey of Castro. “I barbecued with this dude. We ate ribs together.”
Ramsey may receive a $25,000 reward for helping rescue women. Watch him recount the rescue below.
